Want to learn how to make festive bread, or the perfect gingerbread house? Six of the top classes being offered by cookery schools around the UK for Christmas 2013

Festive fun: there are Christmas workshops happening all over the country, including at Bettys in North Yorkshire 

Gingerbread house class (parent and child), London

London bakery chain Konditor & Cook is running a series of family-friendly workshops how to build the perfect gingerbread house. Suitable for complete beginners, the class will see you and your offspring using gingerbread panes, icing and glitter to create a quirky seasonal centrepiece. The session lasts two hours – and the gingerbread house hopefully at least till you get home.

Christmas bread and baking class, Dorset


Become a bread expert at this one-day course at River Cottage, hosted by Aidan Chapman of the Phoenix Bakery. After hitching a ride on a tractor down to the farm, you’ll be taught the dough basics – from kneading to using yeast – before applying your knowledge to Christmas goodies including a chestnut and walnut loaf, cranberry and yoghurt sourdough and an Italian version of mince pies. Lunch is included.

Edible gifts class, London

Bored of giving socks and bottles of wine for Christmas? Cookery school Leiths is running a fun festive workshop on edible gifts, from Christmas cupcakes to spicy seasonal chutneys. A light lunch will be provided, and they promise to do all the washing up afterwards.

Italian Christmas feast class, Somerset


Famous French baker Richard Bertinet runs a number of classes in the Georgian city of Bath, where he owns a stylish bakery. This Christmas he’s offering an Italian cooking class, where you’ll learn to create “fabulous seasonal Italian dishes” and enjoy a leisurely lunch with wine.

Christmas chocolate box, North Yorkshire

Legendary northern tea room and bakery Bettys also runs its very own cookery school. Spend a December morning there creating festive-themed chocolates and truffles, all of which will be wrapped up at the end for you to take home and pop under the tree.

Christmas dinner party, Oxfordshire


If you feel your festive fare is getting a little stale, find inspiration at this Christmas party-themed class at Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons, chef Raymond Blanc’s restaurant and cookery school near Oxford. The class promises to reveal how to make seasonal, impressive entertaining dishes with miminal effort.
