Recipes for cancer sufferers: food that feeds both body and soul

An inspiring new book brings together nurturing recipes for cancer sufferers from a group of top chefs, each of whom has been touched by the illness

Healing: Daniel Galmiche's sea bream

'To eat is to live.” As Michel Roux Snr, who has suffered and recovered from cancer, describes it, food not only nourishes us physically, but lifts the spirits, “making us feel more human”.

Never are these things more powerfully felt than by people undergoing treatment for cancer, or in the difficult days of recovery. But as anyone who has been affected by the disease will know, the appetite fluctuates, the senses are altered, and the pleasure of eating – along with vital nutrients – can fall away.

Today, we publish recipes from an inspiring new book, Recipes for Life, by Peter Marshall (himself in recovery from cancer), which has brought together a group of top chefs, each of whom has been touched by the illness. Working with the medical team at Leaders in Oncology Care in London, they have developed recipes to provide optimum nutrition for this situation, but which will feed the soul too. Mark Jordan, one contributor, says: “With cancer, even just talking about what you’re going to eat changes the subject to something really positive.”
