You will easily forget all those nights of sound sleep if you fail to sleep well for a single night. Many a times, getting a proper night’s sleep becomes a luxury. We give you some tips that can help you get a sound sleep during troubled times.

1. Identify the cause

Try to understand why is it that you are not able to sleep well. Is it because of some environmental factors or is there something else bothering you internally. If the factors are environmental, you can go for things like an eye mask, ear plugs, neck pillow, etc. If you have something that is worrying you and not letting you get a good sleep, then think of ways to solve it.

2. Do not worry about not getting sleep

Know that you are not going to die if you do not get proper sleep for a night. While in bed, do not keep worrying about the fact that you are unable to sleep. Constantly “trying” to sleep will only make you more anxious. However, if the problem persists, see a doctor.

3. Try to focus on the good

No matter how bad things seem to be, try to see the silver lining. It may be easier said than done but if your troubles are affecting your sleep then it could lead to serious health problems. Try to train your mind to focus on the positives and let go of all that is bad.

4. Talk it out

Talk to your friends and family members. Sharing what’s bothering you or how a situation is affecting you might give you some solace. Also, discussing things with others might give you a new perspective. If you keep everything bottled up, it is bound to cause you emotional and mental distress, thereby leading to lack of sleep.

5. See a shrink

If your problem persists for a long time, it could be a good idea to consult a therapist. There may be times when you do not feel comfortable sharing your worries with your loved ones. In that scenario, a shrink can lend you a listening ear with an understanding heart.

6. Minimize caffeine intake

If you are addicted to caffeine, then ditching it or minimizing its intake might help you sleep better. Having excessive caffeine would only add to your sleep troubles.

7. Sleep when you get the chance

If you are not getting proper sleep at night, try making up for it as and when you can. Although there is no substitute for a good night’s sleep, you can try and make the most of the situation. Your body requires rest to function properly. So, if you feel like taking a nap in the afternoon, go ahead and sleep.

8. Power naps

If the situation at home or office is making you lose your sleep at night, try opting for power naps, a short sleep that ends before deep sleep. It will make you feel recharged and revitalized. Even if you take a power nap for 6 to 10 minutes, it will enhance your learning and overall performance.

9. Listen to soothing music

Listening to some calming tunes can help relax you and might help with the sleep. If the situation does not allow you to put the music out loud, you can use earphones and try to lose yourself in the sound.

10. Meditate

Meditating can really help you relax and calm your mind. There are a number of meditations to choose from. Once you have figured out what it is that is hindering your sleep, you can choose a meditation that would help with the cause.
