Power in the powder: Betaine, a supplement derived from sugar beets, could transform your favorite sports drink into a legal performance enhancer, finds a new study from Ithaca College.

When cyclists drank a carb-electrolyte beverage amped up with the supplement for a week, their average peak power during sprints improved by more than 6 percent.

“Betaine may contribute to creatine synthesis, which improves strength, power, and short-term performance,” says study author J. Luke Pryor, M.S., A.T.C.

Try this: Dissolve 2.5 grams of betaine (either powder or tablet form) in a 20-ounce sports drink, and down half in the morning and half in the afternoon.
