Rose Elliot on the best restaurants for vegetarians

The vegetarian cookery writer shares her favourite restaurants.

The Gate, London

Up an outside staircase in leafy Hammersmith is this lovely, airy gem of a restaurant that serves Moroccan-influenced vegetarian food. It’s hard to choose from their tempting menu, which includes spinach, feta and artichoke tart, but I particularly like their crispy-coated aubergine – it’s delicious.

Rasa, Newcastle

This delightful restaurant is no longer exclusively vegetarian but you’d hardly notice. It serves beautifully spiced Southern Indian food and a delectable range of fresh chutneys and dips. I’m rather partial to their crunchy dosa masala and the black-eyed bean curry with yoghurt.

Mildreds, London

A friendly restaurant in the heart of Soho with a buzzing, youthful atmosphere. It serves tasty, good-value vegetarian street food. Try the huge energising detox salad or their Middle Eastern mezze. It doesn’t take bookings so you might have to queue at busy times but the ambience and the food are worth it.

David Bann, Edinburgh

I made a note to go back to this sophisticated restaurant because the food was so delicious. It’s fine vegetarian dining, with dishes like Mediterranean gnocchi and chickpea and cashew koftas. Its moody, deep aubergine walls and warm welcome make it a real treat for a special evening out.

Demuths, Bath

A charming, tiny bistro tucked away down a side street in Bath. The menu changes frequently with an emphasis on market-fresh, seasonal vegetables prepared in an imaginative way – crispy ricotta fritters with buttered asparagus, for example. Desserts are divine too. Even meat-eaters will be impressed.
