Do your parents think you are unreliable? Have your parents caught you lying to them before? It is essential to have a relationship of trust with your parents because they are the founding pillars of your life. Here are a few tips you can use to can gain your parents’ trust.

1. Stop lying

One of the first things that you must do to earn your parents’ trust is to stop lying to them. Whether it is a small white lie about where you spent your money or a big lie about your grades in school, don’t lie to your mom and dad. When your parents find out the truth behind your lies, they are likely to be heartbroken. This may scar them badly and make it difficult for them to trust you again. Not lying to your parents will be a big step on your part to gain their trust.

2. Show your parents that you can be a responsible person

You cannot tell your parents one fine day that you have become a responsible person. You have to prove it over a period of time with your actions. Make sure that you complete tasks that your parents give you. This could include taking care of the house when you are not around, watching your pet in their absence, doing household chores without their supervision and helping them with errands. By showing accountability in such small things, you will be able to gain your parents’ trust in the long term.

3. Gain brownie points for your honesty or good deeds

It is one thing to be an honest child and another thing to let your parents know about it. Sometimes it may happen that your parents are so busy that they don’t have the time to listen to all the things that you did in the day. Because of this, they never come to know about the instances where you showed honesty or a good deed that you may have done for someone. If you don’t communicate this to your parents, you will never gain brownie points for your actions and they may never trust you enough.

4. Do well at school

Whether it is sports, academics or other extracurricular activities, doing well in school or college is a sure shot way to get your parents to trust you. When you do well, it reassures your parents that you are responding positively to all the things that they taught you in childhood. It also lets them know that you have the capacity to stand up on your own feet in the future.

5. Communicate regularly

Gaining your parents’ trust is not something that you can do overnight. One of the ways in which you can do so is to communicate with them on a regular basis. Talk to them about what you did throughout the day, your friends and the things that are going on in your mind. The more you open up to your parents, the more you will make them feel that you are a reliable person who they can trust blindly.

6. Act in a way that a third person praises you in front of your parents

When your parents hear praise for you from another person, their trust for you is likely to increase by leaps and bounds. Do something nice for someone in the family in a way that you get complimented by that person in front of your parents. If you have received written praise or awards at work, show that to your parents so that see you as a trustworthy person.
