Think thin.

The next time you catch sight of a bag of chips, picture six-pack abs. The best way to suppress a craving is to think about the benefits of avoiding the food rather than the negative consequences of pigging out, suggests a new study from the Oregon Research Institute.

MRI scans revealed that when people used this technique, they showed less activation in the brain regions involved in cravings and more activation in the areas that govern self-control.

This strategy boosts your willpower because it’s more rewarding and motivating than negative thoughts, which can just be frustrating, says study author Sonja Yokum, Ph.D.
