Before you blow a fuse, use this strategy to keep your cool.

Pissed off? Talking it out could ease your anger, finds new research from Carnegie Mellon University.

In the study, people completed a challenging math task while another person tried to make them angry. Afterward, half the participants reported their feelings and half didn’t.

The results: Those who kept their emotions bottled up experienced a fight-or-flight response—which research has shown can be rough on the body—while people who talked had more of a “freezing effect,” giving them time to actually think through a situation, says study author Karim Kassam, Ph.D.

That extra time spent processing your feelings helps you keep your cool instead of lashing out, says Kassam. Although it may sound silly, simply identify your emotion in the heat of the moment by saying (or even thinking), “I’m frustrated,” or “I’m annoyed.” Doing so could pump the brakes on your knee-jerk reaction and help you stay calm, says Kassam.
